{"id":10979,"date":"2023-11-01T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/?p=10979"},"modified":"2023-12-06T08:42:18","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T15:42:18","slug":"social-emotional-consideration-from-a-school-counselor-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/resources\/social-emotional-consideration-from-a-school-counselor-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Emotional Consideration from a School Counselor&#8217;s Perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social Emotional Consideration from a School Counselor&#8217;s Perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The high school counselor position is one of the most interesting groups of I work with. &nbsp;Their influence on a student\u2019s experiences happens throughout schooling and beyond.&nbsp; To that end, counselors must be able to nurture relationships with students despite not having a set class schedule.&nbsp; Moreover, the number of students they interact with is vastly larger than any teacher-student ratio shared by their colleagues. Because of these realities, a counselor\u2019s ability to tap into Social Emotional Learning practices is an essential skill set for them to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These realities, however, invite another dynamic into the mix.&nbsp; Counselors are often the objects of a nexus of thinking that views them simultaneously as valuable, respected, inaccessible, and indifferent to the other. Students I work with will often bemoan the lack of counselors in their buildings and their <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-Slide-1-copy-2-3-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10994\" style=\"width:430px;height:225px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-Slide-1-copy-2-3-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-Slide-1-copy-2-3-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-Slide-1-copy-2-3-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-Slide-1-copy-2-3-1536x804.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-Slide-1-copy-2-3-2048x1072.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>tight appointment schedules.&nbsp; But at the same time, they will celebrate the guidance they received from their counselors and admit that it was  they who could take the initiative more regarding outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With these multiple narratives in existence, supporting school counselors may seem too complex or esoteric.&nbsp; But, your services may be more valuable than you think. &nbsp;In order to reconceptualize counselors\u2019 roles, I have used an analogous approach to their work while highlighting the Social Emotional Learning competencies that correspond to each.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Counselors as Coaches: Developing adolescents\u2019 <strong>Relationship Skills<\/strong> is central to any team\u2019s success.&nbsp; Counselors empower students in similar ways but with different \u201cteammates\u201d like their teachers, parents, and classmates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Counselors as Teachers:&nbsp; One of the best outcomes of an education is the development of <strong>Self-Awareness.&nbsp; <\/strong>Counselors are part of students\u2019 pathways through life, which is better understood when students know themselves better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Counselors as Administrators:&nbsp; A counselor\u2019s caseload of students is a microcosm of the entire school.&nbsp; And like a school administrator, providing a context where executive functioning and <strong>Self-Management skills<\/strong> are nurtured a valuable experiences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Counselors as Parents: <strong>Responsible Decision Making<\/strong> is part of every student\u2019s high school career. From course selection to post-graduation plans, counselors are another voice for students to consider in their decision process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Counselors as Social Workers:&nbsp; Life happens in school and outside of the school day.&nbsp; Understanding how to navigate norms, mores, and institutions, are key aspects of <strong>Social Awareness <\/strong>counselors impart on students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you think about the roles and practices of high school counselors, you will find that using Social Emotional Learning as an inroad is a valuable way to start conversations with schools about how to support their work.\u00a0 To that end, I consistently find a way to reference the <a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/fundamentals-of-sel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>CASEL SEL framework.<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 You will notice that their five core competencies are directly related to the five roles summarized above.\u00a0 I contend that connecting SEL with counselors and then to the whole school community demonstrates insights not commonly held and, therefore, is an asset you should leverage. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-1-1024x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8874 smush-dimensions lazyload\" style=\"--smush-image-width: 1024px; --smush-image-aspect-ratio: 1024\/1024;width:324px;height:324px\" width=\"1024\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Written by:&nbsp;<\/strong>Craig Perrier<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Educational Thought Leader and Practitioner<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Craig&nbsp;is the High School Social Studies Curriculum and Instruction Specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools in Fairfax, VA.
