As the federal government continues to provide pandemic aid to schools up and down the country, the hope is for teachers and other decision-makers to turn this money into solutions that will provide for future generations of students. But is this the route they\u2019re taking? How much money are they spending, and who has the final stamp of approval?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is our moment to ensure that we\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/education\/schools-are-getting-a-windfall-of-money-for-pandemic-relief-how-will-they-spend-it\/2021\/08?utm_source=nl&amp;utm_medium=eml&amp;utm_campaign=eu&amp;M=63043520&amp;U=2403818&amp;UUID=29969ee8cebafc89f9f1ca8100210230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reopen, reinvest and reimagine our schools<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0differently and better than ever before,\u201d U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said at a virtual education summit in June. \u201cThese next months and years will determine the trajectory of success for millions of students in our care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">How much funding is available?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Federal Communications Commission<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, it received over\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/fcc-announces-over-5-billion-emergency-connectivity-fund-requests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$5 billion in requests<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Emergency Connectivity Fund<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in the first round of applicants from schools and districts. This fund was a broader version of the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">American Rescue Plan<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the initial recovery funding to assist those financially impacted by the pandemic. The number of applicants showing interest in the ECF indicates how much teachers and administrators\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/technology\/school-districts-seek-billions-in-new-federal-money-for-connectivity-fcc-announces\/2021\/08?utm_source=nl&amp;utm_medium=eml&amp;utm_campaign=eu&amp;M=63012127&amp;U=2403818&amp;UUID=29969ee8cebafc89f9f1ca8100210230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">need assistance for the next school<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0year and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe Emergency Connectivity Fund<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is the single largest effort to bring connectivity and devices to students who lack them\u2014and this robust response from applicants shows the tremendous need in our communities,\u201d said Jessica Rosenworcel, the acting chairwoman of the FCC, in a statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There will be a second application window\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">between Sept. 28 and Oct. 13<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to continue to support schools and libraries during this school year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What are the plans for these funds?<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 407px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pictures.brafton.com\/x_0_0_0_14145837_500.jpg\" alt=\"School Funding and Pandemic Relief\" width=\"407\" height=\"271\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 407px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 407\/271;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zoom call meeting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The funding is to support schools and libraries as they continue to navigate the pandemic<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Making purchases toward tools and resources for students can give them access to the devices they need to complete their coursework. Still, they might not have them at home. Laptops, tablets, WiFi hotspots, modems, routers, and connections for students and school staff to use off-campus can be derived from this funding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Teachers, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use these funds to support learning outside the school, even if remote learning is at a standstill. Providing students with tools that can help them with homework or other questions about their courses can provide a seamless transition into what the future may look like for student-teacher communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Who are the key stakeholders and decision-makers?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">School districts and state departments receive the initial funding. Still, many teachers are helping with the decision-making process regarding funding for school supplies and tools needed to complete the school year. With that said, educators understand how good these funds can be and would benefit from the funding regularly, not just during a pandemic. After all, teachers spent about\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$386 out of pocket<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to purchase learning materials and supplies during the 2020-2021 school year, so government funding could prevent this from occurring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSchool districts and state departments of education are working hard now to persuade Congress to make the emergency connectivity fund permanent,\u201d Reg Leichty, a founder, and partner at Foresight Law + Policy, told EdWeek. \u201cMaking the fund permanent is essential to delivering education 2021 and beyond.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">At Agile, we help edtech companies connect with educators.
