Suddenly, it was imperative that social distancing and other preventative measures were being taken to prevent the spread of sickness. Safety has always been important to educators, but this was a new danger that had not been tackled before.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe and Sound Schools conducted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.safeandsoundschools.org\/2021\/07\/13\/state-of-school-safety-report-reveals-30-gap-between-parents-and-administrators-on-perception-of-school-safety\/#:~:text=98%25%20of%20administrators%20believe%20they%20handled%20the%20COVID%2D19%20crisis%20well%2C%20whereas%20only%2074%25%20of%20parents%20agree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2021 survey of school district administrators<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, teachers, parents and other stakeholders regarding school safety. Interestingly enough, their survey found that administrators and parents have a different view of how secure schools were in the past year. For example, \u201c98% of administrators believe they handled the COVID-19 crisis well, whereas only 74% of parents agree.\u201d When working to improve school safety against a new threat, novel solutions must be used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some schools are offering remote options and being more conscious of limited germ spreading activities. COVID-19 protocols are becoming the norm, with the CDC providing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/schools-childcare\/k-12-guidance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">guidance<\/a><\/strong> for K-12 schools. Here are some examples from their website:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting vaccination can help schools safely return to in-person learning as well as extracurricular activities and sports.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to universal indoor masking, CDC recommends schools maintain at least 3 feet of physical distance between students within classrooms to reduce transmission risk.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students, teachers, and staff should stay home when they have signs of any infectious illness and be referred to their healthcare provider for testing and care (five days).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, technology use has increased, meaning that cyber security has become more important than ever. Students and teachers are interacting via Zoom and other digital tools under the impression that they are safe from prying hackers. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hassan.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Letter%20to%20ED%20and%20DHS%20-%20K-12%20cybersecurity%20-%20Letterhead_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2021 letter<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Education and Homeland Security departments, a group of senators urged them to strengthen cybersecurity for K-12 schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agile-ed.com\/contact-education-marketing-experts\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pictures.brafton.com\/x_0_0_0_14109002_400.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:contain;width:280px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>New Technology&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are new concerns regarding school security, the age-old issues are not going away. Luckily, there are new emerging technologies that will make learners and educators feel safer as well as create an environment that is more conducive to growth. Here are some examples of new technologies that some schools are beginning to implement:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New visitor management systems.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student and visitor screening methods.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mask compliance software.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/passk12.org\/guidelines-resources\/pass-school-security-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>PASS<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has its own security guidelines for K\u201312 schools, which recommend security technologies to beef up safety protocols. Here are their top suggestions:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A duress button system for offices and classrooms.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An in-building emergency communication system.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A public address system.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radios with access to frequencies used by emergency services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, some of the company\u2019s suggestions are more complex than others. Specific needs are informed by the school\u2019s history and the likelihood of certain emergency situations. Regardless of history, however, it\u2019s a good idea to look into new tech before the need arises.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the world continues to shift and change, so will schools\u2019 concerns and approaches.
