This article will share some current efforts districts are using to combat teaching shortages and then propose areas you can explore as thought leaders in education.

Partnering with a district’s plan provides an opportunity for you to be seen as a reliable collaborator who can build relationships in areas beyond your contracted agreement. The first step is to reach out to schools to see what their plans are. This may also be public knowledge, so taking time to research this can lead to better use of time with district leadership.

Overall, schools have been using a combination of traditional approaches, often applied from other fields and contextual strategies that leverage their systems and networks. Strategies target both the retention of current educators and the hiring of new teachers to fill gaps from retirement and those leaving the field. Table 1 categorizes and briefly describes four approaches for both ventures.

Traditional

Hiring and Rehiring Bonuses

Extra compensation is attractive and often boosts feelings of being appreciated by the school system.

Early Hiring Initiatives

There was a time when teachers were hired almost exclusively in the summer. Early hiring opens the pool of candidates and seeks to employ them sooner, not later.

Mentorships and Orientation Programs

It is surprising how many new teachers experience neither of these, especially when we expect that new teachers are supported. Supported teachers stay in the field longer.

Recruit Educators from Other Fields and States

Job fairs and partnerships with universities in other states and career switcher programs can yield impressive numbers. Relocation stipends help, of course.

Progressive

College to Classroom Program

Districts have worked intentionally with colleges and seniors in their high schools that will guarantee a teaching job in the district they went to.

Professional Development that is Actually Both!

Professional development is a large term that is often bemoaned by educators. But some districts get this aspect of education right by promoting PD that augments educators’ professional practices and identity instead of “Checking a box.”

Nurturing Long-Term Subs

If you have long-term subs in schools, you have a pool of candidates for full-time teachers.
